The Delta 46-460 lathe has a structure typical of modern woodworking. There are two metal legs at both ends of the lathe. The latter is the support of the lathe on which the bed stands.
The bed is a 25.5-inch extension bed. It is made of cast iron and forms the basis for the rest of the lathe.
The head is bent inwards in the direction of the front foot of the lathe. The convex part has a slightly thick layer of black plastic. Underneath is a layer of cast iron with a spindle, a speed control system and a handle protruding from the back of the headstock.
The rear head tube has a head tube that fits perfectly to the front axle. In between is a room where a piece of wood should be. At the top of the bed there is an apron with in it the transverse slide, a saddle and a rod with tools.
The saddle is also made of cast iron and has the shape of a trapezium. At the end of the saddle the lower part of the tool holder starts. It is black and made of plastic and starts to thin out, but it suddenly widens and forms a base on which it should fall.
On the other side of the base is a cast iron apron. It starts in the middle of the back of the bed and extends to the bed. There is a direct space that divides the base and forms the base of the movable saddle and apron.
The spindle is available with 1 HP and can reach speeds from 250 to 4000 rpm. It is set to 1700 rpm by default, which will definitely make you a woodworker!
It can also turn long blanks that are actually more than 12 inches long. For a lathe that pretends to be of medium length, it is a true masterpiece. Of course, by combining different speeds, you can edit workpieces of any size relatively easily.
To improve it, the speed is changed by a switch, which can have a 3-speed setting. Depending on the setting, you can work with three different speed ranges.
Oh, if that’s not enough, the pin can also change direction! All you have to do is press the switch and change the direction of rotation so that you can change the direction of rotation upwards without having to remove and rotate the workpiece.
The change in speed is due to a belt in the head running in the engine. The Delta belt system is patented for its exceptional quality and is designed so that you can change gears in no time. It is also very effective, so you can be sure that the force you use will make the part rotate.
Considering the material this trick is made of, it is not surprising that it is quite heavy. The Delta 46-460 weighs 97 pounds and has quite strong traction, so it’s a bit bulky to move.
It also has a bed extension that increases the existing length by 6 inches. From time to time it gets so long that you can even chop out a long piece of wood. Of course you can also get a 3-inch plate and 2 tool holders with a diameter of 6 and 10 inches.
Of course you can also change the speed of the belt. The plastic part of the head can be opened to open the rotating strap. Since it is an internal part, it is incredibly easy to repair. The belt itself has 6 grooves for better grip (and thus greater efficiency), and the adjustment can only increase speed accuracy.
As far as assembly precision is concerned, the lathe is made to measure. It is so precise that the pins are perfectly aligned at both ends. When you load a symmetrical workpiece, both pins fall perfectly in the middle of the two ends.
It’s a little difficult, too. He can do a lot of work without his body being visibly worn out. The parts are also very robust, so they do not need to be replaced for years. Because it has a shiny grey colour of cast iron and a black spot in the plastic, you can be sure that it will look cool for a long time to come.
The body itself can be heavy, but that makes it possible to work long and continuously. Except for a little cleaning, you don’t have to take care of this baby!
- The fact that it has an extremely wide speed range makes it sufficiently versatile. You can edit all parts, large and small, by adapting them to the workpiece.
- The design also makes it one of the best in terms of damage and durability, so you don’t have to worry about continuity for the foreseeable future.
- You have to deal with cumbersome equipment – a real headache, even if you get good resistance in return.
